Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa
MoistureShield Vision composite decking creates beautiful, comfortable ocean-front deck
Visitors from around the world come to Miramar Beach, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico, for the region’s exceptionally beautiful beaches. Making the most of the area’s brilliant white, sugar-like sand, the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa is the largest full-service beachfront resort on northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast.
One of the 602-room hotel’s popular amenities is a 25,000 sq. ft. ocean-front deck with three 40-foot boardwalks leading directly to the beach. Designed to be very versatile, the deck provides hotel guests with a large, beautiful area to soak up sun during their stay, while also offering an outdoor space to host a variety of ceremonies, receptions and group dinners.
To provide its guests with an exceptional deck, the hotel owner and management company, Sandcastle Resorts and Hotels, sought a beautiful decking material that would not become uncomfortably hot in the summer sun. In evaluating a range of decking options, the hotel’s director of engineering, Leonard Martin, became aware of MoistureShield® Vision® composite decking with the CoolDeck® technology option.
“We did some in house testing and found MoistureShield Vision resolved both issues of temperature and aesthetics for our resort,” said Martin.
Martin noted MoistureShield’s CoolDeck technology and splinter-free nature were essential for the deck, as every day more than 2,000 guests walk on it. “Giving our guests the confidence they can come and go from the beach to their guest room without burning their feet is most important to us at Hilton Sandestin,” said Martin.
The hotel completed installation of MoistureShield Vision decking in the Cathedral Stone color in March 2018. To provide a clean, screw-free surface, Martin’s team chose Special CAMO type fasteners with stainless steel screws installed through the sides of the material.
Hilton Sandestin’s guests love the new decking. “We have received multiple guest comments about the look of the wood grain and color — even providing the name of the product to over a dozen guests thus far,” said Martin.
MoistureShield Vision deck and trim boards are made with an advanced manufacturing method that creates composite decking that closely resembles wood. Building on the company’s past manufacturing advances, it developed methods for: 1) applying pigments to create a variegated appearance; and 2) for randomizing the embossed grain pattern so no two boards are alike. This eliminates the pattern repeat problem common in many man-made building materials, for a rich and natural looking composite deck.
MoistureShield anticipates that the new patterning technology it developed for Vision decking will eventually enable designers and building owners to customize the surface appearance of their deck boards – something that is not available with any other composite decking.
