MoistureShield and Lowe’s Partner to Create a Relaxing Outdoor Space for Families of Hospitalized Children
One of the most stressful situations a family can face is the hospitalization of a child. Staying in unfamiliar surroundings, often far from home, only serves to increase the worry of an already anxiety-inducing setting. To address this problem, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois (RMHC-EIWI) strives to keep families close to each other and the care their children need – giving them a place to rest and refresh in a home-like setting.
As with other chapters in RMHC’s 64-nation network of local chapters, RMHC-EIWI, provides families the essential comforts of home: warm beds, hot showers, home-cooked meals, kitchen and laundry facilities, a playground, recreation areas and more. The idea behind these well-equipped Ronald McDonald Houses is to offer families some semblance of normalcy in the midst of a very difficult season.
Outdoor spaces are a key aspect of promoting family relaxation and togetherness, but at the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City, Iowa, the deck received little use, as the wood decking was deteriorating.
Recognizing this problem, employees of the Lowe’s store in nearby Coralville, Iowa, decided to volunteer to replace the deck as part of the company’s Lowe’s Heroes program. “The Ronald McDonald House has benefited several employees and their families at our store,” said store manager Amanda Sernulka-George. “The organization continues to give to families at a time when it’s needed most, and we love the idea of being able to give back.”
To provide a durable, beautiful and safe deck surface that will require limited maintenance, the Lowe’s store chose MoistureShield composite decking to replace the aged wood deck surface. “The composite material will provide a safe, clean area for all family members, including young children learning to crawl, patients in casts and wheelchairs, and others with mobility issues, without the worry of splinters, rough edges or uneven surfaces,” said Barbara Werning, executive director, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. “It will also minimize necessary maintenance to keep the space in top shape for our families.”
In the same way the Lowe’s employees were moved to create a top-notch outdoor space for families served by RMHC, MoistureShield contributed to the effort by offering its decking at a discount. The Lowe’s Heroes of the Iowa City store in September 2017 installed 240, 16-foot long, moisture-resistant MoistureShield Vantage deck boards, in the Cape Cod Gray color.
“Spaces like our outside deck provide families with a place to enjoy the same kind of family routines they would have at home, including a space to grill, picnic, play or just enjoy the outdoors,” said RMHC-EIWI’s Werning. “When families spend days or even months at a hospital, they value opportunities to spend quiet moments together.”
MoistureShield is proud to partner with Lowe’s and RMHC-EIWI to help provide this safe and comfortable space for families in need.
