Popular local attraction in Hurricane Alley relies on durable, attractive MoistureShield composite decking

From high heat and moisture to hurricanes, the Florida climate really tests outdoor building materials. After 18 years of punishing weather, including Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis in 2004 and 2005, the treated wood boardwalks at the Gulf Breeze Zoo near Pensacola, Florida, were severely deteriorated.

As part of extensive upgrades to the locally popular 50-acre attraction, zoo officials replaced the damaged wood decking with 1,500 square feet of moisture-resistant MoistureShield® Infuse™ composite decking.

“The owners were looking for decking that would stand-up to our demanding Gulf Coast climate and look great for years – and MoistureShield really fit the bill,” said Dennis Meredith, president of Meredith & Sons Lumber. “Plus, the composite decking is splinter free, which is important for children who go barefoot.”

Completed in May 2017, visitors who come to the zoo this spring and summer to see the new caracal kittens and baby giraffes will also enjoy walking on safe and attractive MoistureShield boardwalks.

“In addition to MoistureShield’s durability and good looks, the zoo was sold on the decking’s simple maintenance – it never needs to be painted, stained or sealed,” noted Meredith.

MoistureShield composite decking has been used throughout Florida for its superior moisture resistance, including for a 17,000 square foot deck at the Hotel San Destin just down the coast from the Gulf Breeze Zoo. Other notable installations in the state include more than one-half mile of boardwalks at Big Cypress National Preserve adjacent to the Everglades, and in a boat ramp submerged year-round in the Rainbow River in central Florida’s Blue Run of the Dunnellon.

Because of a unique manufacturing process, each MoistureShield board is protected to the core from moisture and damaging insects, and is backed by the industry’s leading lifetime warranty. With 95% total recycled content, MoistureShield composite decking and railing is also an environmentally responsible choice, helping prevent discarded plastics from ending up in landfills.
