Plasticizers called phthalates (pronounced tha-lates) are added to PVC used in some building products to achieve flexibility. These phthalates can separate themselves from the host PVC and easily transfer to other surfaces or be released into the air. Some phthalates have been linked to causing cancer, kidney and liver damage, neurological disorders, interference with hormonal activity, and birth defects.
PVC can be particularly harmful to children and unborn babies. Use of PVC may result in exposure to lead and chlorine-based toxins. Dioxin, responsible for the contamination at Love Canal and Times Beach, is created when the chlorine in PVC is produced, used or burned. With a certain amount of exposure, reproductive and developmental health problems may occur.
