As composite decking becomes more and more desirable, many misconceptions about composite deck maintenance have arisen. Below are a few myths about composite wood decks, as well as some tips on how to keep your MoistureShield® composite deck looking gorgeous year after year.
Myth: Composite decks require no maintenance.
Truth: Composite deck are 'low' maintenance, not to be confused with 'no' maintenance. MoistureShield Decking, like other composites, must be cleaned periodically according to the material's guidelines. MoistureShield Care & Cleaning Instructions.
Myth: Nothing can stain a composite deck.
Truth: While most composites require no staining or sealing, some substances could leave a stain on the deck. Use common sense when exposing your deck to chemicals or substances that will harm the material.
Myth: Mold and mildew cannot grow on a composite deck.
Truth: Even composites that are designed to resist mold and mildews can show these growths if boards were not spaced correctly, causing dirt built-up in between boards. The fungi is actually growing on the dirt, not on the board. The same is true if your composite deck is not periodically cleaned as directed – mold and mildew can grow on residue on the deck.
