Building Products Expert Selects MoistureShield® Infuse Decking for His New Home

A long-time journalist in the home improvement industry recently contracted to have a custom home built for his family. For the home’s one-of-a-kind deck, he chose MoistureShield composite decking based on his long-term familiarity with the product’s beauty and durability.

“I’ve followed MoistureShield closely for many years, and even toured their recycling and manufacturing plants,” says the journalist/homeowner. “MoistureShield is an especially beautiful composite, and stands up well to the elements, so it was a natural choice given the high-end look my wife and I wanted, and our demanding Minnesota winters.”

Designed and built by Robert Heidenreich of The Deck Store, the 650 square foot, multi-level deck features MoistureShield Infuse composite decking in the Northern Hickory color. “MoistureShield Infuse decking and trim has a real natural look to it – no two boards have the same grain and streaking pattern,” says Heidenreich. “It’s a perfect complement to a lakefront home that offers sweeping views from the inside out.” One design challenge Heidenreich faced was to layout a large deck that wouldn’t cause glare through the home’s many, large windows when the sun is low in the winter sky. “Although MoistureShield is made with recycled plastic, its authentic earth tone colors are not shiny like some wood alternatives can be,” he says.

To create a striking visual, Heidenreich installed the deck boards at an angle to the house. For a seam-free look and given that the boards span the joists diagonally, Heidenreich explains he used MoistureShield’s 20-foot long deck boards. Further completing the deck’s smooth appearance, he installed the decking with MoistureShield hidden fasteners that fit into the deck boards’ grooved sides. “The clips install really easily compared to other brands,” he says. “They are larger and easy to handle, even with gloves on.”

For nighttime safety and an eye-catching look, Heidenreich used a router to cut grooves in the deck’s stair risers to allow light out. “MoistureShield cuts and machines far easier than anything else, so helps me achieve my design vision,” he says.

Thanks to an exclusive Co-X manufacturing process, MoistureShield Infuse decking and trim features a realistic wood-grain finish, enriched color variegation and an enhanced color palette of deep earth tones. As with all MoistureShield decking products, Infuse is backed by a transferable lifetime warranty, and comes with the further protection of a 25-year fade and stain warranty. Infuse decking also is available with or without the innovative CoolDeck® technology, which reduces heat absorption by up to 35% compared to conventional capped composites in similar colors, for a more comfortable deck.
