Casey Tridico had a dream.

The 7-year old Texas goodwill ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association longed to find a playground where children of all abilities could play together. After Casey died in 1995, her mother, Debra, worked with the city and other residents of Grapevine, Texas, to bring that dream to life. The result was Casey’s Clubhouse, a wheelchair accessible and all inclusive play environment. "This little girl’s dream to play with her friends on the playground spurred Casey’s mom to make life better for others," said Mona Burk, marketing and media relations manager for the Grapevine Parks & Recreation Department.

In 2013, the city completely revamped Casey's Clubhouse to be larger and even more fun for all children, with a design by Cre8Play. The Minneapolis-based design/build firm was named Best in Show at the 2013 National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Congress, and is famous for imaginative and innovative play structures including larger-than-life animals like a giant goose named Queenie, an NFL Play 60 play environment for the Carolina Panthers, and most recently for Container Park in Las Vegas.

The new Casey's Clubhouse in Grapevine's public Dove Park is a sprawling, whimsical treehouse-inspired play area that looks like a vision out of the Hobbit or Dr. Seuss. It is worlds apart from the metal jungle gyms of yesterday. The universally accessible clubhouse includes slides, swings, rock climbing area and many themed interactive features, such as Daisey & Skippy turtles skiing, Dove dolphins with mist, a fishing shack and a zip-line.

For surfacing the ramps and accessible stairs and for use throughout the primary clubhouse and fishing shack, Cre8Play chose MoistureShield composite decking, as it offers long-term durability, is easy to work with, is splinter free and is available in a variety of colors.

Made with a unique manufacturing process that fully encapsulates wood fibers in water-resistant polyethylene plastic, MoistureShield resists moisture and insects. The product is durable enough to be used on the ground, in the ground or underwater and still retain its lifetime warranty. The manufacturer, Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies (A.E.R.T.), designed the product to hold up and look great for decades longer than traditional wood decking.

"Cre8Play builds play environments to stand the test of time, and our decking needs to do the same," said Todd Lehman, owner and director of design for Cre8Play. "We are very confident with MoistureShield and their great selection of durable, long lasting products. Cre8Play has used MoistureShield in numerous projects over the years. It is an incredibly versatile and durable choice for decking, accessible stairs and more."

Additionally, the high-performance MoistureShield deck boards are easy to rip, route, and bend, which enabled Cre8Play to produce numerous specialty shapes. "We love the workability of MoistureShield, as it allows us to stress and carve our designs," said Lehman. To help make the playful design of Casey’s Clubhouse even more visually engaging, Cre8Play used 7 of the 8 colors available in the MoistureShield line.

Feedback on the new Casey’s Clubhouse has been very positive. "It really exceeded my expectations," said Kevin Mitchell, City of Grapevine Parks & Recreation assistant director. "It's the largest treehouse in the world accessible to kids in wheelchairs.” Stacey Weiss, a parent of a special needs child added, "What a blessing that whatever Hannah wanted to do, I never had to say no. That is a gift I will never forget."

MoistureShield composite decking and railing offers the solution for every decking need with its range of attractive colors, realistic embossed wood grain patterns and grooved boards to accommodate hidden fasteners. Because of a unique manufacturing process, each MoistureShield board is protected to the core, and is backed by the industry's leading lifetime warranty. With 95% total recycled content, MoistureShield products are also an environmentally responsible choice, helping prevent discarded plastics from ending up in landfills.
